Is I-95 (Jersey Turnpike) to GW Bridge a good route to Long Island??
I’m debating on which route to take into Long Island. I will be going to Stony Brook/Port Jeff area. I’m leaving tomorrow morning early from Ohio. Below are some questions I have.
I’m traveling by myself and a little nervous about the busy traffic.
I think there is a chance of snow tomorrow so also the route that would be better to take in snow.
1) I -95 North to GW Bridge ? Will it be okay Sat evening? Scarry?
2) Someone suggested I-278 going over Staten Island then Belt Parkway. Do you think that route would be worse with bad weather ? (That may be a little out of the way) I’m not sure.
Do you think Belt Parkway is worse than GW Bridge Route?
Sorry if you’ve seen alot of my questions. I’m still debating on which way to go.

Neither one is much better than the other – especially on a Saturday (day or evening).
1) If you go via the GWB then you have the Cross Bronx Expressway to contend with and then the connecting roads to either the Whitestone or Throggs Neck Bridges.
2) This one can be just as bad because the Belt connects to road that lead to JFK airport and people are nuts.
A lot should depend on where in NJ you are. If you are closer to the GWB use that, if you are further south than use I-278 over the Verrazano and then the Belt. (If you use this when you get on the Verrazano get over to the far left lane (upper or lower level). On the return trip use the lower level of the Verrazano.
Bad weather makes traffic on either one slow and bumper to bumper.
I have driven back and forth on both. I don’t have a preference.
