O’Hare Airport Vs. Midway Airport .. Which Should You Use?

There are many factors that can influence travelers’ decisions. Factors such as airline choices, how often flights are delayed, crowds, availability of taxis, safety, and cost. For sure O’Hare has the most choices of airlines when flying. However, if you are flying for your company, they may be the ones to decide which airline you fly which eliminates the choice.

Cost of flights is also a big factor. Southwest Airlines normally has the most reasonable flights and don’t charge for luggage. So for most people, if the ticket cost is the issue, That means flying out of Midway Airport because Southwest does not fly out of O’Hare. However, Southwest has more limited destinations that the variety of airlines at O’Hare.

If you are flying internationally then you pretty much are destined to fly out of O’Hare. All of the international airlines are at O’Hare so most travelers that have an international destination fly out of that airport. If they have a connecting flight, it is possible to start out at midway and leave for the international destination at the next stop.

Weather is often a factor because in Chicago during the winter, there are often flight delays due to weather. O’Hare is most affected by the weather and has more flights delayed or cancelled in snow storms than Midway.

Midway is easier to get to if you are driving and is accessible walking if you live within a couple of blocks, while O’Hare is an airport you must drive to or take a taxi. O’Hare because of its size is in a much safer location while the surrounding Midway neighborhoods leave a little something to be desired. So even if you live close by and don’t want to drive, you might want to consider taking a taxi to the airport. A lot of vacationers simply choose the airport closest to them.

Both airports have economy lots as well as hourly lots, but both are pretty expensive. Suburban travelers often choose to take a taxi to and from the airport because by the time you pay for parking, it is much more economical to take a taxi and get door to door service.
