Cozumel Weather – When to Go and When to Stay Away
Cozumel weather is guaranteed to keep a vacation hot.
The largest island in Mexico is popular as a stop on western Caribbean cruises because of its reputation for beautiful beaches and excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. It’s also one of the hottest destinations in the Caribbean.
It is so popular for cruises that 16 times more people visit Cozumel via cruise than for a long-term vacation, such as a week or more.
The island also attracts day trippers from Cancun, which is 35 miles to the north. As a result of its closeness to Cancun, Cozumel shares most of the same weather patterns, which means heavy rain in the fall months.
Over the course of a typical year, Cozumel has an average monthly high temperature of nearly 88 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the World Meteorological Organization. It has an average monthly low temperature of less than 72 degrees, which is lower than the typical Caribbean location.
From April through September, the average high temperatures exceed 90 degrees, which is a long hot spell for any Caribbean destination.
Average low temperatures are in the high 60s for December through March. As a result, the nights will be cool, and so will be swimming in the ocean.
Historically, Cozumel gets nearly 60 inches of rain per year. It hits a high point of 9.5 inches in September and October apiece. Those months are the stormiest times of the Caribbean hurricane season, which starts June 1 and ends November 30. In contrast, rainfall is less than 2 inches in March and April.
September and October average 15 rain days, but March and April have only four.
February and March are the favorite months for tourists to visit, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization. Those months have the benefit of moderate heat and low rainfall. June through August are popular as well.
Heavy rainfall makes September through November the least favorite months. The cooler weather of January also makes it unpopular.
