What’s the proper way to pronounce Louisville??
OK…I was travelling through the fine state of Kentucky a couple of months ago—-I was heading north and got lost on 60b…..somewhere around Elizabethtown. I wanted to get to Louisville—so I asked around, requesting directions from a few native Kentuckians…A–NY—WAY—First, I pronounced it—–Loooo—eeeee—–ville….and nobody knew what I was talking about….so, then I tried….Looo—-issss—ville…still no response….in desperation—I tried Loooo—-aaa—vulll…and surprisingly, they understood….I was just wondering, what is the way to pronounce it correctly so I don’t sound like some kind of dumb tourist…..
Loo-ee-vil
Louisville was named after the French King Louis XVI due to his country’s support for the US during the Revolutionary War against Great Britain, and the correct pronunciation of the French name Louis is Louie (with a silent s).
Some people in other parts of Kentucky pronounce it as Loo-uh-vuhl, but Loo-ee-vil is the correct pronounciation.
