Hotel Situtation in Istanbul Turkey?

Granted, some people have real problems, but this is my question. My girlfriend and I are traveling to Istanbul next January, and we are torn between two different hotels. Because we both travel for work, we have accrued heavy Marriott points. The Marriotts we can stay in are far away from the down town areas (40 minutes driving, but there is a train station nearby). The travel agent has a hotel in the middle of town for 100 bucks US/night for five nights. That’s a lot of cash…but it’s doable if the experience is gonna be well worth it. Then again, free is great yet trains suck. From people who have traveled to Istanbul before, what is the right thing to do?

Here’s a map to show where the hotel is and where downtown is: http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Marriott,+Istanbul+Turkey+to+Istanbul+Turkey&vps=1&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=41.682395,92.900391&ie=UTF8

I know where Marriot is. It is OK for business trips, but you need a little more effort for touristic visits, though not undoable.

If you decide on Marriot, I advise taxi from the hotel to Kadıköy and then a ferry to wherever you want to do, and back the same way.

I’d say you would enjoy your visit if you stay near touristic places and avoid hassle. Taxi costs some, too, after all.

In any case, enjoy your visit.
